GENESIS [mixed media]
Sensory Deprivation, 2020, 48x60,” Mixed Media (digital photograph on canvas and wood with paint, snakeskin, cacti, flowers, leaves, crystals and resin)
This piece is one of my first larger scale mixed media pieces, now labeled the ‘Genesis' collection or series. The photograph, like so many, has a rich and sublime back story filled with serendipity from a Mexican Cenote many moons ago. A few years later I created the physical mixed media piece using natural and personal elements such as a rattlesnake skin which has its own story.
Each of the images below are large scale mixed media pieces with resin. More details on these and the majority of the collection can be found on the Saatchi Art website.
Genesis is a organic composite, mixed media series. My photographic practice is about remembering our sacred nature, and celebrating how our bodies mirror and embody the natural world. The imagery explores relationships between the human figure and the elements by integrating subjects into the landscape through palette, composition, and contour. This project brings the viewer into the physical space where the art was created with collected objects from the origins of the photograph. Grounded and connected, this is a therapeutic process, facilitating transport into the art. Each photograph becomes a living organism, like a caterpillar blossoms into a butterfly.
Paint on Photos
In addition to the complex mixed media pieces above that include objects found in nature such as bones, crystals and leaves, I also make simple mixed media works, as part of my 'paint on photos' series such as this study of watercolor over studio portrait here, which consists of merely paper and paint.
