We Are Gods
What is god? Godly? Do you believe in god?
Religion has always been a topic of great fascination to me. I grew up in a family of recovering Catholics, only going to “normal” church a handful of times during childhood in an upper class white village. I learned to meditate officially when I was 17, and looking back on most of my childhood, principles of Buddhism, Taoism, and paganism were at the forefront of our upbringing.
When I got to college, had the privilege of meeting one of the best professors at our school, who happened to be the religion teacher. I was able to dive into universal, godly, religious concepts, learning and contemplating existence, life, death and afterlife through a philosophical lens that resonated with me. I spent much time studying concepts of mysticism and religion across cultures and time periods.
After much time contemplating “truth,” and of course still with much confusion, I found and continue to find God everywhere; In nature, in you, in me. As they say, God is love. Angels walk among us, and we are them. Archetypes, gods, goddesses, creatures over time and themes throughout religions cross over and are defined in my mind through congruency and coherence.
After studying art history in Florence Italy, diving deep into the imagery created during renaissance times… façades of churches, golden leaf, murals, canvases of all kinds, studying the golden crowns of deities on the canvases in museums, I became mesmerized. Overtime, I have been more attracted to the use of gold in my art, gold paint and material of any kind ending up in almost every creation. This series is an homage to the higher powers, the divine within and around us all. The gold paint around each human in this series alludes to renaissance times, the mystical experience, and the eternal alchemy of mankind.
